ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE
Students who have not had the opportunity to develop their spoken and written English to the required level received support from our EAL specialists. During these lessons, when children are often withdrawn from the main classroom, specialist teachers work to develop vocabulary, boost reading and improving writing skills through a range of direct instruction and fun ‘hands on’ activities. Most children in the EAL programme receive support for between 12 to 24 months.
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
The school employs Special Needs staff to support those children with “learning differences”. These children can be supported in the mainstream classroom or may be withdrawn individually or in a small group to receive specialist tuition to develop not just their academics, but also their social and life skills. Classroom staff are also supported with tips and strategies to aid learning for these children. Occasionally, when a child’s needs are great, a Learning Support Assistant can be appointed to support the child through the day, in addition to the therapy provided from the SEN staff.
KHMER LANGUAGE SUPPORT
As a bilingual school we place equal importance on the “home” language. Children whose Khmer is weak (for whatever reason) will receive support in Khmer for vocabulary, reading skills and writing. Children are identified in class and assessed by their Khmer language teachers and recommended for different levels of support
NURSE
A healthy and hydrated child optimizes learning opportunities. Students’ health and well being are important and so a School Nurse is on site during the day. She deals with everyday bumps and scrapes, provides some screening and checks and advises on vaccinations and general health issues. She will dispense prescribed medications and is an invaluable source of information.
